Brianna Faulkner is a Baltimore artist whose work visualizes the narratives of black women. Baltimore photographer Antonio McAfee uses various techniques in his work to create multiple ways to see representations of people and figures through transitions, from the viewer’s perspective or within the portrait. I Henry Phillips, also a Baltimore photographer, captured American history and culture from the perspective of African Americans, illustrated life’s joys and tribulations of the working class spanning over three decades, including family dynamics and traditions. Each artist’s contribution guides us on a visual trajectory as we learn about one woman’s journey home. Learn more.

BootPrints: The Film

BootPrints is a new movie of the stage play by University of Baltimore alumna, Latonia Valincia-Moss, being produced and directed by Nate Couser, actor, artist, and host of The Artist Exchange radio show, and documented by Myles Banks.

Bootprints, a memory play, delivers poetic monologues through the beauty of one woman’s life in an honest, gut wrenching performance about molestation, divorce and inequality seen through a spectrum of colors. Myeshia Adams, a born southerner, has lived in the north and transformed her life through education and marriage. At her grandmother’s death, memories of her northern and southern life collide as she grieves for more than the loss of her grandmother. The story is told through three different personas that emerge from Myeshia’s memory of “women as carpet.”

For the past 10 years, The Artist Exchange has recognized the importance of exposing and creating opportunities to assist individuals in the healing process of traumatic experiences by way of the arts, and to express their stories concerning the trauma that is often hidden, denied and lived through. Through these life experiences, BootPrints has been a tool in helping to facilitate conversations surrounding trauma. > Learn more.
